When San Diego native and orthodontist Dr. Melanie Wang opened Dr. Melanie Orthodontics in her hometown, she wanted to support the community to be a pillar of her practice. And, for the last 13 years, Dr. Melanie and her team have been passionate about giving back through service projects and donations. Most recently, they sponsored new ballet barres for the Southern California Ballet (SCB).
SCB is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that gives young dancers artistic and performance opportunities and provides enrichment, outreach, and entertainment to the community. During the summer, SCB kicked off its Leap Forward fundraiser with a $25,000 goal that would be used for expanding and renovating its facility.
To help the cause, Dr. Melanie Orthodontics sponsored all of the new ballet barres in Studio A. The original barres had been used for almost 30 years and were pulling away from the wall and giving the dancers splinters. Not only did SCB reach its fundraising goal and begin renovations in August 2021, they were also able to install new, secure, splinter-free ballet barres while staying on budget.
“The new ballet barres donated by Dr. Melanie are connected to the walls and the studio floors so that the dancers at Southern California Ballet will have proper barre support for generations to come,” said an SCB representative. “Having a proper ballet barre ensures that dancers are able to achieve the alignment their body needs in ballet and we know that everyone at Dr. Melanie Orthodontics knows the importance of proper alignment!”

SCB’s production, which has been delighting audiences for nearly 30 years, will be held at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts on December 17 and 18.
