Braces FAQ
We’re sharing answers to the questions we hear most often from our Rancho Santa Fe and 4S Ranch braces patients. Browse the questions below or if you’d like even more details, schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. Melanie Wang online or by calling us at (858) 613-3688 (San Diego) or (858) 255-7800 (Rancho Santa Fe).
A: Getting braces put on is completely painless, doesn’t involve needles and takes less than an hour. First, we’ll polish your teeth and prime the surface for the adhesive. When your teeth are ready, Dr. Melanie places the brackets on your teeth using a custom 3D-printed tray. This ensures each bracket is in its ideal position on every tooth and it’s a lot quicker than the traditional way of putting on braces. Then, she’ll thread the archwires through the brackets before securing them in place. Before you leave, we’ll fill you in on everything you need to know about taking care of your braces.
A: Getting your braces taken off is just as painless as getting them put on. Our San Diego orthodontist Dr. Melanie will use special tools to loosen and remove the brackets and wires. She’ll scrape off any leftover adhesive, polish your teeth and let you admire your new smile in the mirror.
A: Every patient is unique. While it will depend on your individual case, generally, treatment takes between one and two years. Once Dr. Melanie has a chance to examine you and develop your treatment plan, she’ll be able to let you know how long your treatment will last.
A: The exact cost of braces will depend on the complexity of your case and how long your treatment lasts. When you visit us for your consultation, Dr. Melanie will assess your bite and create a personalized treatment plan. This will allow us to give you an accurate figure. We believe in complete transparency and will tell you the cost of braces upfront. There will never be any hidden surprises. In an effort to make braces affordable for our patients, we accept most insurance and offer flexible payment plans.
A: No way! It’s never too late to get a smile you love. In fact, about one in four orthodontic patients are grown-ups. While a major perk of getting braces as an adult is improving your appearance with a fantastic smile, the benefits go beyond just the cosmetic. Straightening your teeth can improve your confidence, oral health and overall health. While today’s metal braces are more aesthetically pleasing and comfortable, if you’d rather keep your treatment under the radar, we also offer clear braces that blend in with your smile, as well as clear aligners, which are virtually invisible. To learn how adult braces treatment can fit into your busy lifestyle, schedule a consultation at Dr. Melanie Orthodontics today online or by calling us at (858) 613-3688 (San Diego) or (858) 255-7800 (Rancho Santa Fe).
A: No, braces don’t hurt and you should never feel serious braces pain. That being said, when you first get your braces put on and sometimes after adjustments, your teeth and gums can be a little sensitive and sore. If that’s the case, try sticking with soft foods and cold foods and drinks until the discomfort goes away. You can also try taking an over-the-counter pain reliever if you need it. The good news is that at our practice, we use special braces software to ideally position your brackets so you’ll have less inflammation and discomfort throughout your treatment.
A: Yes. Seeing your general dentist is actually more important than ever since the brackets and wires trap food and plaque. Your dentist will make sure your smile is healthy and cavity-free all throughout your braces treatment. Usually, it’s recommended that you see your dentist twice a year for a check-up and cleaning, unless they would like to see you more frequently.
A: For most treatment plans, you’ll visit us every six to eight weeks. These appointments are quick and Dr. Melanie will simply check your progress, answer your questions and make any necessary adjustments.
A: You should brush your teeth with braces in the morning, after meals and snacks, and before bed. Be sure to floss once a day too. If you don’t have a toothbrush on-hand when you’re out, rinse your mouth out after eating and then brush when you get home.
